Trader Joe’s Overnight Oats Review
I picked these Trader Joe’s overnight oats up at my local store recently, intrigued by how easy it would be to have overnight oats without the fuss of making them myself.
Trader Joe’s currently offers two flavors, almond butter chia and vanilla-flavored overnight oats (without chia seeds). I found them in the refrigerator section of the store.
The packaging is pretty simple. These overnight oats come in a small container weighing only 5.5 oz. You simply peel back the label and dig in!
There’s no added sugar in either of these, which is excellent if sugar is a concern. They are naturally sweetened with date paste. But, of course, if you like things sweeter, you can always sprinkle sugar on top or add any additional sweetener of your choice.
The texture of the almond butter chia one was very creamy, with the chia seeds giving it a somewhat chewy flavor. Rolled oats combined with almond butter make the oatmeal creamy, while chia seeds add a punch of protein. Even though the package is small, it’s pretty filling with almond butter, rolled oats, date paste, chia seeds, and sea salt.
The vanilla overnight oats have a slightly different texture. They are still very creamy, but the oats are not as blended as the almond butter chia version, making the vanilla texture closer to regular cooked oats. The almond butter also makes these quite filling!
They aren’t watery at all and remind me more of a pudding. The consistency resembles something slightly creamier than regular rolled oats topped with almond milk or any alternative milk beverage of your choice.
What Are Overnight Oats, Anyways?
Overnight oats are basically oatmeal that you make the night before and then eat in the morning. The oats soak overnight in a liquid, like almond milk, non-dairy yogurt, or a combination of both. You can also add other flavors to your nighttime mixture, like cinnamon or vanilla extract. Then, in the morning, once you’re ready to eat it, just add some toppings, and voila! Breakfast is served.
Serving Ideas:
- They are perfect all by themselves right out of the package.
- Mix in your favorite fruit for a nutritional boost.
- Add sugar, maple syrup, or your preferred sweetener if you need more sweetness.

Almond Butter Chia - Off Taste
I agree with a previous review – the Almond Butter Chia flavor Overnight Oats sometimes has a fizzy/sour taste, as if something has fermented or gone bad. It’s not in every package I’ve tried or even every bite, weirdly enough. But it’s happened enough times that I’m going to forgo picking this one up again.
Good news: TJ’s now has Vanilla, Peanut Butter, and Apple flavors, and none of them have this taste issue in my experience. They also sell chia seeds, so you can easily add them to your overnight oats and it’s a win.

These are "OFF" - thick paste and oddly sour!
These are bad. I had a bite and it seemed “OFF” but had some more. Then I stopped and searched reviews for these Trader Joe’s overnight oats, almond butter flavor. And YES they taste fermented, like vinegar or sour. I have made my own overnight oats and these are just an odd, thick mess that taste fermented or like weird vinegar. NO almond taste. Just really really bad. I hate to leave a bad review but please avoid…. Truly these are bad and weird.

I’m making an effort to shy away from plastic – so my overnight oats are homemade. Still I could see this working out if I was in a pinch

I like that is basicly no prep. Pop in the frig the night before with the liquid of your choice, in the morning add yogurt or fruit and enjoy!

Convenient option
I know these are easy to make at home and they are also cheaper to make at home but they are great to have on hand when I’m feeling too lazy to make them or I don’t think ahead enough the night before to get them going. So thank you Trader Joe’s for making these for lazy people like me that don’t plan ahead 😆
